December 2008

|
|
Greetings!
Once again, December is here already and I'm
wondering how that happened! We hope you enjoy the
holiday edition of The Fruit Connection.
I am
including Maryland events here because all of the
hosts listed offer valuable business and/or
networking resources that can be helpful wherever
you are. If business networking and/or
holiday shopping are not high on your list, (or on the
list at all), perhaps this month's "Fruitful
Recipe" will appeal to your tastebuds, or you will
find the pear selection and storage tips
helpful for ensuring that what you buy gets eaten
at its peak!

Celebrate National Pear Month!
|
|
"In the US, the modest pear has earned its place in
the national spotlight in December, which the USDA
has declared National Pear Month. Recognized for
their positive impact on the economy, their nutritional
value to families and their global culinary uses,
USA Pears and the farmers who grow them are
deserving of such an honor".

Shopping Tips for Selecting Pears and other Fruits & Veggies |
Pears, Anjou/Bosc/Comice/Seckel/red pears:
Pears are one of the few fruits that do not ripen
successfully on the tree. They are harvested by hand
when they reach full maturity but before they are ripe.
Pears will ripen after they harvested.
Choose
a pear that is bright and fresh looking with no bruises
or external damage. Pears other than Bartletts do not
dramatically change color as they ripen. Test for
ripeness by pressing gently near the stem, if it gives to
gentle pressure it is sweet juicy and ready to eat.
Because pears ripen from the inside out,
ripe fruit will give gently to gentle pressure near the
stem. Waiting until pears are soft around the middle
may indicate over ripeness. Store unripe pears in a
warm place outside of the refrigerator in a fruit bowl or
in a paper bag. Check daily for ripeness.
*Store ripe pears in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
Pears are an ethylene producer. Avoid long term
storage next to ethylene sensitive produce. Pears
produce odors which may be absorbed by cabbage,
carrots, celery, onions and potatoes. Pears may also
absorb odors produced by onions and potatoes. Take
care not to store pears next to these items

Holiday Shipping Recommendation |
Due to increased volume during the holidays,
ordering and shipping your gifts as soon as
possible is highly recommended, even if the gifts are
going to "local" (MD,DC,VA etc) addresses. UPS
stops guaranteeing their delivery times on or about
Dec. 10th, and so many people take off from work or
are out on errands that delivering early is the best plan
for ensuring that your gifts get to your friends, family
and business contacts in a timely manner.
