The Fruit Connection April 2006 - Your connection to living life fruitfully!
|
Dear Readers,
As spring arrives in many parts of the country, the
urge to "get out" and "be active" seems to spring up
as much as the blossoms do. One way to ensure
you've got the energy to do everything you want is
to increase the amount of fruits and veggies you eat
each day. Would you like some ideas for doing just
that?
We’ll include some classic tips here that have
appeared in previous editions of the Fruit Connection,
and a few of my "secrets" for getting more produce
into my own diet. If you would like to contribute your
healthy eating suggestions for inclusion in a future
Fruit Connection, send us an email at
tips@fruitiongifts.com.
Please let us know what you think of this more in-
depth Fruit Connection. Look for a "short-but-
sweet" Mother's Day flash the week of May 1st.
We love to hear from our readers. Thanks!

Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables contain
varying amounts of antioxidants such as vitamin C as
well as carotenoids and bioflavonoids, two classes of
phytochemicals that scientists are studying for their
health-promoting potential. Including
YELLOW/ORANGE in your low-fat diet helps
maintain:
- A healthy heart
- Vision health
- A healthy immune system
- A lower risk of some cancers*
* Low-fat diets rich in fruits and vegetables and low
in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk
of some types of cancer, a disease associated with
many factors.
Choose Yellow/Orange fruits like:
Yellow apples, Apricots, Cantaloupe, Cape
Gooseberries, Yellow figs, Grapefruit, Golden kiwifruit,
Lemon, Mangoes, Tangerines, Nectarines, Pineapples,
Oranges, Persimmons, Papayas, Yellow pears,
Peaches, Yellow watermelon
Yellow/Orange Veggies to try!
Yellow beets, Butternut squash, Carrots, Yellow

"What's in your in-box"?
The Fruit Lady’s Mother got me started reading at
age 4 and I have never stopped! I’ll share a snapshot
of just some of the newsletters in The Fruit Lady's in-
box for the week of April 3rd: SuperMarket News
Daily, National Restaurant Digest, Business Monthly
Biz Weekly, The Baltimore Business Journal’s "
Bizwomen Weekly", BWN (Business Women’s Network)
newsletter, The HR Team newsletter, The
Washington Post Lean Plate Club, and of course,
Target!!
Also in the mix: Dynamic Destiny Partnerships, Get
Organized Now, Give to Get Marketing, Transforming
Spaces Spring newsletter, Elkridge Furnace Inn,
Andrea Nierenberg's Tip of the Month, and the
Produce for Better Health Foundation newsletter.
Wow, it can be time-consuming to stay updated,
however I find it very interesting!! It’s always
exciting for me to know what others are reading
(besides "The Fruit Connection")!
Care to share what’s in your in-box these days?
Would you like the links to any of the newsletters
mentioned? I’d love to hear back from you. Send an
email to

As promised, here are a few tips for getting more
fruits and veggies in your daily diet!
From the Produce for Better Health
Foundation:
Some of their more interesting fruit ideas:
- Use fruit as an appealing edible garnish-grapes on
a sole fillet, pineapple slices on an Oriental chicken
breast.
- Freeze pureed fruit to make juice bars or ice
cubes
- Add fruit-apple chunks, orange wedges or grapes,
to lettuce salads
Veggie ideas:
- Vegetable soup can increase your servings-make
your own or add some lightly cooked vegetables to
canned soup
- Check out the salad bar-salads can provide as
many as 5 servings in one sitting!
- Add extra vegetables to sandwiches-tomato
slices, sprouts and lettuce, and to main dishes such
as spaghetti with sauce, stews, and stir-fries.

The Fruit Lady’s own tricks and treats
Favorite snack: apple slices with cheese or
peanut butter, and if I am really hungry I’ll have them
with both! I am not picky about the cheese, however
if there is a time crunch the pre-processed wrapped
cheese slices get me right to snacking.
Decadent treat which works for a snack or a
dessert that elicits oohs and aahs: diced mango with
low-fat vanilla yogurt. Spoon yogurt and diced
mango in layers into nice glass dessert-dishes and
you have a delicious ending to a meal.
Juices: This will probably be tough for soda-
lovers, however a couple years ago I "tricked" myself
into believing that the only drinks to have with meals
were water, fruit juices or veggie juices. This leaves
soda, iced tea and coffee to become "treats" at
other times, while ensuring that I get a couple juice
servings in every single day, plus more water too!

Mangos!
"In 1995, the USDA reported it was the fastest
growing fruit (consumption-wise),beating out fresh
apricots, cherries, cranberries, kiwi, papayas, plums
and prunes. It's only gone up since then..." >
(Source: Fresh from Central America Magazine, 2005-
2006 edition)
Think about how you feel when you hear the word
mango, as in "mango margarita", "mango salsa"... The
typical reaction is YUM!!
Did you know Fruition has mangos? When
they come in they tend to go out the door very
quickly, sometimes several hundred cases overnight.
Prices fluctuate accordingly, however right now a
box of 8 or 9 mangos is selling for 8.00. If you are
interested in ordering please call us toll-free: 800-
481-FRUIT (3784).
Mangos are included in the "Yellow-Orange" group of
produce items. Look to the left for a profile of all the
potential benefits of these fruits and veggies, with a
complete list to inspire your next shopping trip!

Fruitful Recipe: Mango Orange Smoothie |
The sweet, golden flavor of the mango is so
vibrant in this smoothie, it’s hard to drink just one.
Preparation time: 10 minutes or less
Servings: 1.
5 A Day servings: 3.
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe mango,* peeled and pit removed
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- ½ cup vanilla nonfat yogurt
- 1 tsp. honey
1. Place all ingredients into a blender and puree on
HIGH speed until very smooth, about 60 to 90
seconds.
2. Pour into chilled glass and serve immediately.
*Selection Tip: Many times a perfectly ripened
mango is not available at the market, so it is
important to select fully matured, firm to slightly soft
mangoes with no appearance of bruising or skin
discoloration. Allow to ripen at room temperature
until they become soft to slight pressure and have a
fruity fragrance. There are well over 150 varieties of
mangoes yielding a wide variety of outer colors,
shapes, and sizes. All have a dark golden interior fruit
but range in flavors.
